Despite a ban on firecrackers in the national capital, they are sold and used during Diwali. The loud noises from firecrackers lead to various complications in pets every year. It makes the animals panic and the environment polluted. Many cases of death of pets have been reported due to the loud noise from setting off firecrackers during Diwali. In order to spread awareness regarding Animal-Friendly Diwali, 'Aashrey' - Animal Welfare Club of St. Marks World School sensitized students to not use crackers. Our students discussed the harmful effects of fire crackers after watching a video that depicted psychological symptoms observed in animals due to bursting of crackers.

Let's celebrate Diwali more with lights than crackers. Let’s be considerate about the voiceless and our environment during our celebrations. Let’s try not to hurt them for our happiness.

Commemorating the completion of the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the latest tiger census data and released the government’s vision for tiger conservation during ‘Amrit Kaal’ in Mysuru. Project Tiger was launched by the Central government on April 1, 1973 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a bid to promote conservation of the tiger. The programme came at a time when India’s tiger population was rapidly dwindling. According to reports, while there were 40,000 tigers in the country at the time of the Independence, they were soon reduced to below 2,000 by 1970 due to their widespread hunting and poaching.

Keeping the spirit high 'Aashrey' - Animal Welfare Club of our school organised various activities for Classes VI-XII in order to spread awareness on Project Tiger. Students enthusiastically made posters, ppts, logos and documentaries and celebrated the completion of the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger with great zeal.

A wise man once said, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” It’s the stories that give wings to our imagination and take us to places beyond the boundaries of our physical world and into the land of fairies, dragons and wishing trees. Since time immemorial, storytelling has been an integral part of our childhood. To keep the tradition going and to incite curiosity and the love for reading in children, a storytelling activity was held for Class 2 students. The young, enthusiastic storytellers armed with their animal soft toys as props came forth with wonderful tales. While some stories gave the audience food for thought on saving endangered animals and some reinforced moral values about taking care of our forest friends.

The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - (Mahatma Gandhi).

Animals are a wonderful part of our lives. They bring us joy. They make us laugh. They give us unconditional love. They bring us sorrow when they leave us, but leave us with cherished memories of true friendship. Today St. Mark's World School organized 'Aashrey' activity from Class Seedling to 5.

Children enjoyed the animal corner and they had a wonderful time and they also showed their craft skills by creating farm animals using cotton balls. Some students reflected their storytelling skills using soft toys and stated fun facts using flash cards. They also made beautiful masks based on extinct animals and decorated the earthen pots.

We all have a responsibility to protect endangered species, both for their sake and for the sake of our future generations.

Wild animals play an important role in the ecosystem they reside and help in maintaining ecological balance in nature. Due to the excessive use of resources and cutting of forests, many of these species are now at the brink of extinction. It is the sole responsibility of human beings, on an individual basis, to try and conserve our endangered wildlife. In order to spread awareness about protection of endangered species amongst children, an activity was conducted for Classes 4 & 5 by our School’s Animal Welfare ClubAASHREY’, wherein they had to make a book cover depictingendangered animals and ways to protect these animals. The children enjoyed the activity and created beautiful book covers.

It is said that where tigers thrive, it is a sign that the ecosystem is healthy.

We cannot deny the fact that tigers are the largest species of the cat family and are also one of the most iconic animals on the planet. But since the beginning of the 20th century, over 95% of the world’s tiger population is lost. Therefore, International Tiger Day is celebrated on 29th July annually to promote the protection of natural habitat of tigers and to increase awareness about their conservation. Animal Welfare Club – Aashrey organized some activities wherein students of Class III and IV made beautiful dioramas depicting Tiger as the endangered species and tried to raise public consciousness and support for tiger conservation issues.

Migration is a huge feat of endurance requiring great strength and stamina. However, today birds face additional threats caused by human activity. Hungry, exhausted birds may arrive at a stopover site, only to find that it has been destroyed by farming or urbanisation. Every year, millions of birds are illegally killed by hunters, or collide with man-made structures such as powerlines. And climate change is causing habitats to shift or disappear. In order to spread awareness regarding the same, students of Classes V and VI together with 'Aashrey' Animal Welfare Club of our school celebrated 'World Migratory Bird Day'.

The students collected the information regarding the Migratory birds coming to India in winter and summer seasons, their countries of origin, names, habits, sanctuaries and states etc. This information was weaved in the form of a story and then represented through a comic strip. These beautifully created comic strips highlighted the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats in order to save threatened migratory species from extinction.

Aashrey Animal Welfare Club - save birds from heat.

Summers are cruel to all alike, but birds find it harder to survive the heat without shade or water to quench their thirst. Birds fly for miles to get to a water body and many die before they get any closer. Though it might not be possible to provide water and food to the birds but it is well within our reach. In a collective initiative with 'Aashrey' Animal Welfare Club of St. Marks Girls Sr. Sec. School, the students of Classes VI to VIII made attractive clay pots to feed water to the passing by birds. The students filled these pots with water and kept them in their balconies, terraces along with Bajra (millet), rice etc. for their tiny little guests to feast on. It was a very useful activity in the summer heat as it not only provided water to the birds but also arouse a compassionate and empathetic feeling amongst the students.

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."

Human concern for animal welfare is based on awareness that animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well being. It also includes how human activities affect the survival of endangered species.

Connecting one's soul and spirit, Animal Welfare Club 'AASHREY' of our school has been committed to motivate school children to be sympathetic and empathetic towards animals.
