‘The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder’ - Albert Einstein.

Science and Maths Exhibition was organised by our school on 28 July 2018. The endeavour was to inculcate a spirit of enquiry and a culture of ‘out of the box’ thinking amongst our students. Various themes and topics were showcased giving a peek into the minds of the young mathematicians and scientists.

It was exhilarating to see young mathematicians engaged in assembling bits and pieces of their model. Parents / visitors could also play these games and found them interesting. The exhibitors were encouraged by our School Chairman Mr. T. P. Aggarwal, Director Ms. Anjali Aggarwal and Principal Ms. Alka Kher. It was indeed an exhibition which gave the students exposure and confidence to present their thoughts and creativity.

The exhibits that won prizes were:

Science Quest – ‘Splendours of Science’ was held on 22nd August 2015 in the school premises. The main aim was to instill scientific temperament and nurture inquisitive behaviour amongst the students from I - XII following various themes related to physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Various experiments, exhibits(Static & working) and tableaus were put up at senior and junior level. They reiterated the fact that science does not endorse blind belief in anything but contradict and explore both optimistic and futuristic ideas till knowledge is acquired. The need to look beyond the 2nd hand knowledge from books by expanding quest, meaning and purpose with participation and implementation was very well established by restructuring and reorienting knowledge beyond the set pattern of curriculum.

In the senior level, agriculture and food technology from farm to table was the main theme for VI std., alternate sources of energy and future fuels was the topic of VII grade and students of VIII std. showcased exhibits on man made materials and robotics.

Dream big a knowledge based insight into various career opportunities and concepts of psychology like emotional, perception projective techniques, intelligence and unconscious mind were the new inclusion in the quest at the senior level.

The primary wing displayed exhibits on the various themes such as ‘Amazing world of plants and animals’, space voyage, ‘Earth and its Atmosphere’, ‘Know the human body’.

Taking a cue from our PM, the children also displayed “Yogasans” for the benefit of parents and visitors. Students demonstrated live experiments bringing out fun associated with science.

Smoke rings, floating water, disappearing glass, floating pin, bouncy bubbles, water candle, fire proof balloons, floating eggs and sparkling explosion were some of other major highlights.

Parents and visitors had special appreciation for the efforts and indepth knowledge of the participants.

St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janak Puri organized the “Maths & Science Week”, with the sole aim of building up mathematical & scientific literacy, so that students become more productive and engaged citizens of the 21st century. Both Mathematics & Science go together. Mathematics, being the study of quantity, structure, space and change - often called the language of Science is essential for analyzing and communicating scientific theories in a way that is clear, succinct and testable.

The week from 26th to 31st August 2013 was packed with a wide range of activities in which the students learnt, explored, designed, innovated and proudly exhibited their work. Maths activities included “Geometrical Rangoli” (symmetry & design) pattern for classes VI – VIII, ‘Tessellations’ (reflection/rotation) for class VIII, Sudoku for class IX & “Know your Mathematicians” (quiz) for class X.

Working on Science theme “What Next?” class XI & XII students researched on the latest topics such as nanotechnology, Iron man, green chemistry etc. and called on their knowledge and skills to prepare science documentaries. The VI & VII class students gathered relevant and fascinating information on topics such as active contact lenses, robotics, green energy, solar cars and door bots for home safety, among others, for their Power Point Presentations. Students of class VIII & IX debated on the topic, “Is man’s greatest ability responsible for his own destruction?” In “Chemistry in Everyday Life”, the students of class IX and X prepared common house hold items such as soap, perfume and bleaching cream, among others.

An exclusive display of prize winning works of Science and Maths activities held throughout the week was put up for the parents and visitor along with the Mathematical models & exhibits. The Egyptian and Chinese numerals, structure of the pyramids, the water clock, Pythagorean theorem, the Mobius strip, tetrahedron, geodesic dome etc., showcasing the historical timeline of Mathematical progress from the Classical era to modern times. The students of classes IV & V conducted numerous interesting experiments such as secret messaging, piercing a balloon, running pepper, soil conservation, floating grains and explain the concepts to the visitors.

The enthusiasm and confidence of participants impressed everyone. School Director Ms. Anjali Aggarwal, Principal Ms. Rama Sethi, Vice Principal Ms. Alka Kher and Mr. Gurpreet Tuteja, HOD Maths Department, (Delhi University) praised the efforts made by the students and staff in presenting a marvellous exhibition. The week marked a corner stone of successful Mathematical & Scientific education in the school.
